the internet and the world wide web

the internet is, essentially, a network of cables that connect the world. even "wireless" internet is still based in cables. it connects the worlds electronics and computers so that they are able to communicate with each other. the internet started in the 1960's by the government for communication and research. the first functional internet prototype was the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET), created by the US Department of Defense. October 1969, it delivered some of its first message, the word "LOGIN", from UCLA to Stanford. Stanford only received "LO". today, the internet is a large part of daily life, used for finding information and news, connecting with friends and family, entertainment, and shopping.

the world wide web is a collection of connected, public websites that you can search for using the internet. the world wide web was created by Tim Berners-Lee (along with colleagues at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research), starting in 1989. he wanted to create something everyday people could use to communicate and access information easily. the world wide web was released to the public in 1991, and he released the first website then: http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html. the early internet focused on connecting users to websites, and modern internet focuses on content creation.

the internet and the world wide web work together, as the world wide web is part of the internet. you need internet to access the world wide web.

bluetooth and wi-fi

Hedy Lamarr was an Austrian-born American actress during Hollywood's golden age (the 1930s-1960s). her acting career began in 1930 in Europe at age 16. she came to the US in 1938 to further her acting career. in addition to being a talented actress, she was also a self-taught inventor.

during World War II, Lamarr and pianist George Antheil were concerned about radio waves being intercepted by the Axis Powers. so, they came up with a way to communicate using "frequency hopping" in radio waves to prevent interception. while the US navy didn't use this technology until later, frequency hopping principles were used in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Lamarr's genius was under appreciated in her time, and did not make any money off of her invention's patent. she was posthumously inducted to the National Inventors Hall of Fame and has been called "the mother of Wi-Fi". Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp created a a song called "This Is a Song for Miss Hedy Lamarr", released in June of 2022. it was written because in life, Lamarr's talents and contributions were not recognized, only her beauty. it also reflects Depp's conflict with his defamation trial.

Wi-Fi is a network that allows wireless devices to connect to the internet through high-frequency radio waves. it was based on Lamarr's ideas, and started developing in 1985. a prototype for a wireless local area network (WLAN) was created in 1992 by the Radiophysics Division of the CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization) in Australia. the goal was to quickly move data, but this was a challenge because of the nature of radio waves to bounce off surfaces. this is where Lamarr's frequency hopping came into play. with the creation of Wi-Fi, originally named IEEE 802.11b Direct Sequence, the Wi-Fi Alliance, which was then called Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (WECA) was created. they decided to change the name to Wi-Fi because it was catchier and had a nicer ring to it.

Bluetooth was developed in 1994 by Dutch engineer Jap Haartsen, and the first Bluetooth item for consumers (a mobile headset) was released in 1999. Bluetooth works by using short-range radio waves. it was named by Jim Kardach, an Intel employee, after 10th century Danish king Harald Bluetooth. additionally, Harald Bluetooth's rune was used as the symbol for the connection technology.
